Hiking Recipes
Hiking recipes - a spicy topic! I get a lot of questions about hiking nutrition, not always couched in those terms. Some hikers are concerned with taste. Others want to be sure their calorie count is high enough to fuel them through a planned trip. And there are a few folks who want to be sure they are maintaining a balance between energy level, balancing blood sugar levels, and meeting metabolic needs. And rarely, there's the hiker with a medical condition or food sensitivity who is concerned about staying healthy on the trail while eating a limited diet. But everyone wants to know if I have any favorite recipes. Hiking recipes come in many flavors (ok, another bad pun, but an easy one.) I want to share only the best with you here. I'm not a hiking chef. I'm not a trained nutritionist. But I do know my way around macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) from a biochemical perspective. So if I recommend these recipes, it's not just because they're tasty. Or cheap. Or lightweight. Or all of the above. It's because they are balanced and nutritious, satisfying to the palate and the metabolism, and the author has a deep knowledge base. So here's a website to pay attention to:
Laurie Ann March's blog.
Why am I impressed? Lots of reasons! She's written cookbooks - always a sign of a serious foodie. She's an outdoors woman - again, a good sign. She's trail tested these foods. She knows what it's like to be hungry for a tasty, nutritious meal after a long day outdoors. She's a mom. Moms are all about nutrition, right? So check out her links to her books and her websites. Disclaimer: I do not know Laurie. I do not receive a dime for anything you purchase from her. I just want you to have the best sources of information, and she seems like the "real deal"!
