March 2024: A Note From Diane

March, a month of transitions regardless of which hemisphere you hike in.

Trees, flowers, birds, trail conditions - everything is changing.

Let's get right into the news so you can get back on the trail and enjoy this fickle season!

Do you carry the same gear year round, year in and year out?

Please reconsider this habit.

As trail conditions change in response to seasonal changes, your gear list must change. Here is a resource for you:

Hiking For Her's spring hiking gear list

This month’s giveaway is a Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat Pad to go along with my spring gear list.

I consider this a hiker's comfort item that can also be used for safety because it is two sided. The silver reflective side traps body heat, the yellow side can be used to advertise your location in an emergency situation.

Both sides will protect you when you’re sitting on cold, hard surfaces.

It’s great to get more than one use out of an item, isn’t it? It's the hiker's holy grail, in fact.

And at 2 ounces and about two thirds the size of your Nalgene water bottle, you will not notice this addition in your backpack.

Sign up for a chance to win before March 16th!

Finally, finally, this wonderful outdoor company has a size inclusive clothing line for hikers.

It’s their first line of Co-op Brands nongendered clothing, featuring six items: two styles of tees, midweight pullover crew, shorts, joggers and tights.

The color ranges includes neutrals as well as brighter colors. The fabric skews toward non-technical, meaning good for everyday training walks as well as mild season day hikes.

Sizing is available in XXS – 3XL Tall.

Boundary Waters Heritage Trails (BWHT)

Here’s a little known, mainly overlooked way to test your hiking skills: hike through an area renowned for its canoeing opportunities.

There are 12 heritage trails listed in the USFS BWCA trail inventory.

This statistic tell you all you need to know if you’re up for a challenge: only 476 permits were issued in 2022, and no one recorded whether all of them were used.

Did someone say "solitude"??

Give them a look here:

There’s a new women led company that offers inclusive outdoor events to get all women, regardless of background, out into the wilds. Read an interview with Wondery Outdoors’ co-owner and community director, Lydia Mok, published in the National Parks Conservation Association blog:

Ever been frustrated by having to choose a clothing size without really knowing your exact “dimensions” (so to speak)? Wondery Outdoors provides a guide for sizing that might be handy the next time you need to make an outdoor clothing purchase. Here it is!

Have you heard about the new Garmin solar powered technology, called the Solar eTrex? If you’re considering a Garmin for navigation, be sure to consider this new option for unlimited battery life in sunny conditions.

Not every hiker needs one of these expensive devices.

But if you wander off trail, like long hard hikes and trips, enjoy solo hiking, or sometimes forget to leave your itinerary with someone you trust, start thinking about investing in a hand held device that uses GPS and GLONASS satellite systems.

Here are my thoughts on this technology: Satellite technology for hikers

A request

I’ve been having quite a few bounced newsletter signups lately. It’s mostly because the email address has been misspelled.

Example: "gmil" rather than "gmail"

This is frustrating for me because you’ve asked me to send you something but I cannot reach you.

And I can’t correct the spelling error without your permission.

So please consider this a friendly reminder to double check your address whenever you sign up for newsletters and then don't receive them.

It relieves a lot of anxiety for the sender :)
