October 2021: A Note From Diane

How has October been going for you? Here in the Pacific NW, it's been rain, followed by rain, with rain in the forecast.

And a little wind, just for variety. I love wild hiking weather, don't you?

In this month's edition, you'll find a new trail system, some workshop opportunities, a few gifting ideas, a giveaway, and lots more.

Hop on board Happy Trails and let's get to it!

Gifting Season Is Coming Up

Giving gifts to your favorite hiker (including yourself) should really be a year round activity, but since it becomes intensified this time of year, here is a gift guide should you need it.

It's broken down into three categories by price, but every selection is chosen for quality and usefulness on the trail. It's all stuff I use (and gift) myself.

Best Gift Guide For Hikers

I'm also working on a new gift guide, focused on self care. Hikers work hard, but don't always take good care on or off the trail. I'll release the guide soon, and give you a link to it in the next newsletter.

And here's a thought. This month's giveaway would make a great gift for your favorite day hiker!

October/November Giveaway

This month I'm giving away a few copies of Hiking For Her's Best Tips For Women Dayhikers: Everything You Need To Know To Hit The Trail.

Here's the link to my description of the paperback version of the book (there is also a Kindle version), to help you decide if it could be useful to you:

And here's how to sign up for the giveaway.

Big Red And Arthur

If you’re not a bird watcher, skip on down to the next hiking news tidbit!

Otherwise, watch hawks Big Red and Arthur raise a new brood this spring and summer, in a mere 4 minutes.

Best part: The chicks are seriously silly looking!

September 11th National Memorial Trail

Hurrah! Another new trail!

The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a 1,300 mile multi-use (walk, bike) route linking the World Trade Center (NYC), the Pentagon (Arlington VA), and the Flight 93 Memorial (Shanksville PA).

It makes use of the East Coast Greenway and the Great Allegheny Passage. Lots to see!

Caveat: It also uses roads and small highways, definitely not a serene route its entire length.

Take A Hike Day

On November 17, 2021 spend the day celebrating all things hiking because it's National Take A Hike Day!

Here are a few words that describe how hiking makes us feel. What word would you use?

Hiking Research News

Did you know that as a hiker, you’re considered an endurance athlete?

And that’s great news, according to a new study entitled “Acute endurance exercise stimulates circulating levels of mitochondrial-derived peptides in humans.” (link below takes you to the Journal of Applied Physiology).

The short version: Acute resistance exercise does not give you the benefits that hiking does, in terms of increasing the activity of mitochondria. You want active mitochondria for good overall health, because they produce energy for your cells.

Well supplied cells, good metabolic outcomes in terms of blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels, blood pressure just to name three important examples.

So keep hiking!
