I've moved to pretty much always hiking in a skirt/dress nowdays. If I mostly wear them for every day wear why do I need to wear shorts for hiking? I've always found shorts to be binding and chaffing and I don't look good in them anyway. A skirt or dress is just more comfortable for me. Also when the weather gets cooler it's easier to add warm tights or leggings. I find that this works well in the British winter.
The key to hiking with a skirt or dress is not to have them too long. Just above the knee seems optimum. That way you get the comfort and the practicality. I've not purchased dedicating hiking ones, rather everyday skirt and dresses that are suitable.
I don't like skorts as they are too much like shorts IMO.
