What are we looking at in this REI Campwell clothing review?

Sometimes you choose a jacket or a pair of pants because they will work hard for you on the trail.

Other times, you have comfort in mind at the end of long day of hiking: at the trailhead, while car camping, or even at home after a  shower.

This Campwell line of clothing belongs in the second category, with the name being a bit of a hint.

It's a bit retro, a little bit chunky, and very utilitarian.

Hiking For Her tested two items of clothing for this review:

  • Campwell Workwear Overalls
  • Campwell Half Zip Fleece Pullover

In addition, a few more pieces of outdoor clothing will be highlighted in this review because they are designed to keep you warm, comfortable, or both!

Campwell Workwear Overalls

Let's kick off our REI Campwell clothing review with a pair of sturdy overalls.

There's a lot to like about these well built pants!

  • Double-layer knee and thigh fabric for durability
  • Cotton blend for comfort: 73% cotton/25% recycled polyester/2% spandex
  • Adjustable elastic shoulder straps
  • Plenty of room to move and bend in the relaxed legs
  • Button openings at hips to make pulling them on (or off) easy
  • Wide range of inseams: Petite sizes: 27.5 in.; Regular/Plus sizes: 30 in.; Tall sizes: 33 in.
  • Sizing from 0 to 26W

What I liked most about these overalls

HFH is not a newbie when it comes to overalls.

Back in the day (think way back), pulling on a pair of what I called my "bib overalls" after a long hike was a common practice.

They tend to be forgiving in terms of fit, and what do you know? They've come back into style!

To this day, I love the roominess and plethora of pockets a pair of overalls provide.

On a car camping trip, your overalls will be what you reach for when it's time for chores:  hauling water, washing dishes, making a campfire.

Weighing in at nearly 2 pounds, the fabric will keep you out of the messiness of camping, no problem.

Customize the fit of these overalls for your unique style

Because you can customize the size and inseam, these pants will cater to your particular fitting whims:

  • long enough to cover your shoes
  • or short enough to stay out of the way
  • one size bigger to accommodate bulky shirts
  • or snug and trim

You decide!

Now what to pull on over these overalls when a chilly breeze whips up at the campsite?

Campwell Fleece Pullover

This is one well designed fleece!

It's a half zip, so you can regulate your body temperature and pull it on and off in a hurry.

The elastic bungee hem, plus elasticized cuffs, give you plenty of options for a great fit.

The fabric is recycled polyester fleece, soft and cozy.

A really nice feature: the backs of the sleeves from wrist to elbow have a nylon overlay.

  • That's going to extend the life of this garment because you tend to put a lot of wear and tear in that area of any jacket.

What I liked best about this fleece pullover

It's important to point out that this is a short waisted pullover.

It hits just above hip length on me.

That suits me just fine, as I'm on the short end of the stick, but it might expose too much waistline for you if you're going for warmth.

But paired with the overalls above, it will be just the right length.

The kangaroo pocket has my vote for the coziest feature on an already cozy fleece pullover.

Here's a shoutout to more clothing picks
in this REI Campwell clothing review

After I had a chance to try out these pieces of clothing, I was curious about what else might work well for apres hiking and car camping scenarios.

A flannel shirt comes to mind!

Imagine this shirt under your overalls.

Then pulling work duty while cooking dinner at camp.

Finally, acting as a midlayer under your jacket while playing cards or reading at the campfire at the end of the day.

And back at home? A cup of tea, a good book, and you all cozy in this shirt!

Lots of colors to choose from, too.

If you're not a fan of the overalls style of pants, here's something else to pair with the flannel shirt and fleece pullover.

REI Co-op Campwell Pants will still give you plenty of room to bend and reach, thanks to the elasticized waistband and wide legs.

Fine tune the waistband with the internal drawcord.

These would look great with the legs rolled up to show off your camp shoes and colorful socks!

And because they're made of durable cotton canvas you'll reach for them again and again to tackle tough jobs around camp or at home.
